You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself turn into a villain.” it is said in The Dark Knight. Today, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain, this time for Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is strong. The story follows the comic book plot and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is returning. Taika Waititi’s hilarious wit is obvious. And yet, Love and Thunder, while being a great standalone film, doesn’t quite match the previous Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade and his films that stand on their own are either not hitting the target or have completely missed the mark. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a lousy entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a great beginning. In the end, everyone’s list of top five MCU films will contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) certain. The return of the Hemsworth-Taika Waititi collaboration meant that expectations were extremely high ahead of the film’s release.
Gorr (Bale), god who seeks to wipe out all gods attacks New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god-killer by joining with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who has become Mighty Thor. The story is simple and simple, which is quite different from the previous films. The acting is good. Hemsworth performs well as the character who is experiencing a midlife crisis, but Bale and Portman stand out. The title credit sequence in the pre-title credits the extent to which Bale can do. The film tells an emotional story of the astrophysicist who is able to show her biceps more than one.
Marvel is known for its own flexing too, throughout all the cameos of this film. Alongside the complete Guardians of the Galaxy team we also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor as well as Thor. Also, we have Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of the Asgardian play in the respective roles. Waititi who has been directing since Ragnarok has directed Jojo, the Oscar-winning Rabbit, is back in his most loved genre, this time. It’s hilarious to watch an image of a couple of noisy goats and Korg’s narration regarding Thor’s background. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie is Old Spice’s ambassador.
Then there’s the running gag of Thor trying to find his Mjolnir however being terrified of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags work, but they’re at the expense of deep emotion. They also reveal the weak plot. Thor: Love and Thunder covers a wide range of love, ranging from a father-daughter relationship to the complicated romance between estranged lovers… It’s parallels between Gorr losing respect for the god he worships, Rapu, and Thor becoming disillusioned with Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). The ideas are endless, however…
Like always, there are plenty of easter eggs as well as references to movies such as Interstellar and Harry Potter. We get a shot of the god dead, Falligar, taken straight from comic books. We see Hemsworth dressed in the original Thor costume that comic book readers will recognize. When Thor bares it all during a tussle with Zeus We see a tattoo reading ‘RIP Loki The helmet of the trickster etched onto Thor’s back. The dark Necrosword is revealed, and it’s fascinating to watch the different weapons shown to be able to control people, given the manner in which Stormbreaker and Mjolnir appear to possess their own minds.
We saw this in Shang Chi’s ten rings in Ms. Marvel’s mysterious bangle as well as the Ebony blade during the Eternals post-credits scene. The phrase “Gods are not empowering you but they will empower the power of God to help you” from Marvel’s latest show, Moonknight, feels very familiar. There’s even a story of Valkyrie lost her beloved love during war, and Korg falling in love another Kronan man.
The first part of the movie reminds us of all the colour we loved in Ragnarok The majority of the second half is in the darkness, with everything being all black and white. The action scenes in monochrome can be quite satisfying and should be noted.
Hemsworth continues to keep playing Thor The news will be a huge relief to MCU fans who’ve seen the original Avengers die or hang their heads.
